Boatplans by Bertil Andersson

It all started in 1966. The boat that we used at home for fishing was pulled out of the sea for the last time and I understood that it would disappear within a short time. It was build in the 1890's. One way to retain the boat was to measure it and draw a plan of it. With a lot of work and several big problems to overcome plan no 1 was created.

During the 1970's plastic boats were produced in a larger scale and our traditional wooden boats disappeared more and more. I saw it as my duty to try to measure the most common of our wooden boats. A very time consuming job that lasted for 40 years and now consists of 97 measured boats. It is several thousands of hours performed during my spare time.

The results are used both by model builders and boat builders and it feels very gratifying. Thanks to my son Roger's knowledge of the internet most of the plans can be viewed all over the world.

I came across Bertil's site www.batritningar.se during my search for designers around the world. I was immediately captivated by these craft - probably because of some traces of Viking blood, from a dark distant past, still running in my veins. Then the quantity of work required for each set of lines drawings sunk in. The man should have a grant from the Swedish Maritime Historical society for the work he has done to preserve boats from one of the worlds most important maritime cultures!

The line drawings are on sale for a very modest price. If you are a model builder or want your very own mini drakar this is the place to find the plans. Seriously there are craft there for many uses and of many styles. My own personal favorite is the N° 94. Confirmed wooden boat building experience required of course.
